Civil War returns to
Mapledurham House & Watermill

Nr Reading, Berkshire RG4 7TR

We are being very warmly invited back after the last years fantastic event. Mapledurham House has been the backdrop for many TV and Film sets such as The Eagle Has Landed, Sharp, Foyal’s War and Miss Marple. There is also a watermill at Mapledurham which is one of the last traditional working flour mills in the country.

Mapledurham is a Royalist house of the Civil War, one of its own officers being shot by the sentry’s for forgetting the password while returning late one night. In 1643 Parliamentary troops besieged and sacked the house, but did not destroy it.

There will be a Living History display and traders area close to the house and River Thames featuring:

Sutlery - See the soldiers and Officers food being prepared for the day.

Blacksmith - Essential to anyone needing metalwork made or repaired.

Laundry - Clothes washing before the days of the washing machine.

Training Drill - Soldiers being trained in postures and how to use their weapons safely.
This is where the soldiers learn their basic skills and are corrected for mistakes made.

Needle work- From a time when it was more common to make and decorate your own clothes.

Alchemist, Astrologer and Apocrypha - A rare opportunity to see how drugs were made and ailments were treated.

Officers Dining in the 15th Century Manor House - Food, Table Manners and Etiquette of the 17th century.

Drill Display - Formal Drill, an opportunity to see the soldiers at their best.

Ladies Cosmetics - 17c home-made make-up for the ladies.

Army Surgeon
- Not for the squeamish, learn about surgery before anaesthetic, and understand how the surgeon’s instruments are used.

Skirmish - Based on how Mapledurham House was taken during the Civil War.
Lots of noise and confusion.

These times are subject to change if it becomes necessary.
